Saints

To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ who are in Colosse (V.2 NKJV).

What do you think of when you hear the word “saints”? Super spiritual people? Christians from history who did lots of miracles? Jesus’ first followers?

It’s probably not a name we would use for ourselves, but Paul called all Christians “saints” (EPH. 1:1; COL. 1:2 NKJV). Did he call them saints because they were perfect? No. These people were as human as us, with all the same problems. So what did he have in mind? The word “saint” in the New Testament simply means we’re set apart for God. It is a way of describing Christians as people who follow Jesus (EPH. 1:3-6).

As saints we should want to live up to that name by relying on the power of the Holy Spirit to change us. For example this means “there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people [or, in other words, saints]” (EPH. 5:3). We are to put on a new way of life of looking out for others (ROM. 16:2) with humility, gentleness, patience, love, unity (EPH. 4:1-3), obedience and determination when things are hard (REV. 13:10 AND 14:12). In the Old Testament, one psalm writer called saints “the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight” (PS. 16:3 NKJV).

Our relationship with Jesus makes us saints forever. But we need to obey God through the power of the Holy Spirit if we want to stand out as saints to the rest of the world.

GOD’S FAMILY IS ONLY MADE UP OF SAINTS.
