When its Hard to Sleep

When its Hard to Sleep

In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety (V.8)

Psalm 4
Reading

What keeps you awake at night? Lately I’ve been losing sleep, tossing and turning on my bed, trying to work out a problem I’m facing. And now I’m even worrying at night about not getting enough sleep to face each new day! Sound familiar? Fall outs, break ups, exams, whatever it is—we all worry at some point or another.

King David was clearly stressed out when he wrote Psalm 4. People were making him look bad by accusing him of things he hadn’t done (V.2). And some were questioning whether he should even be king (V.6). David probably felt angry for being treated so unfairly. Surely he could have spent nights stewing about it. Yet we read these amazing words: “In peace I will lie down and sleep” (V.8). I read one Christian author’s thoughts on this verse: “In lying down … David gave himself into the hands of another; he did so completely. Having handed over his cares, he slept; there was here a perfect trust.”

But what made David trust God? From the start, he was confident that God would answer his prayers (V.3). And he was sure that since God had chosen to love him, He would meet his needs. May God help us to rest in His power when we’re worried, knowing that He is always with us. In His powerful and loving arms, we can “lie down and sleep”.

What I’m thankful for . . .

Father, thank You for hearing me when I speak. Nothing is too difficult for You and You’ll always do what is best for me. I give my worries to You and rest in Your power, knowing that You are with me.

WE CAN GIVE OUR CARES TO OUR TRUSTWORTHY GOD.
