UNIQUE
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made (V.14).
Psalm 139
Reading
Humans are not special—at least that seemed to be what one zoo thought a few years ago. The zoo set up an unusual enclosure for four days. It had this sign on it: “Humans in Their Natural Environment.” The human ‘captives’ had signed up online to be put in the cage. To help visitors understand the humans, they created a sign explaining their diet, habitat and threats. According to the zoo’s owner, the point of the whole thing was to downplay the uniqueness of human beings. One visitor seemed to agree. “When we see humans as animals, here, it kind of reminds us that we’re not that special.”
That’s the total opposite to what the Bible says about us: God “fearfully and wonderfully” created us in “his own image” (PS. 139:14; GEN. 1:26-27).
David began Psalm 139 by celebrating that God knew everything about him (VV.1-6) and was always with him (VV.7-12). God uniquely and deliberately designed and formed David’s entire life—the complexities of his internal organs, the look of his face (VV.13-14) and the number of his days (V.16). When David thought about everything God had done to create him, he couldn’t help but praise Him in awe (V.14).
Human beings are special. God created us in His image to know Him personally. Like David we can praise Him because He has made us, by His own hands, to be extra special.
Thinking it Over…
How does it make you feel to think you are fearfully and wonderfully made by God? Why do you think so many people want humans to be “not that special”?
GOD CREATED HUMAN BEINGS TO BE LIKE HIM.
