GETTING EVEN
If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone (ROMANS 12:18).
Matthew 5:38-45
Reading
One Sunday morning, a church leader was punched by a man when he got up to give the sermon. The police came and arrested the man for his attack. But then the church leader carried on with his sermon! And after the service he went to see the man down at the police station and offered to pray with him. What a great example of reacting to anger with love and kindness!
While there is a place for self-defence, revenge is a big no-no in the Bible: “Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbour as yourself” (LEV. 19:18; SEE ALSO DEUT. 32:35). Jesus and His followers also taught the same message (MATT. 5:38-45; ROM. 12:17; 1 PET. 3:9).
We need to avoid trying to get our own back on people who hurt us because we will just end up causing more and more harm. Revenge just causes more problems. It never brings an end to the pain. Instead of hurting those who hurt us, may we live at peace with everyone (ROM. 12:18), ask for help from our church when we’re butting heads with others (1 COR. 6:1-6) and trust God to bring justice in His perfect timing (V.19).
To pray about . . .
Father, when I want to get even, help me to focus on Jesus so that I might love like He does. It’s not easy to be kind to those who hurt me, but I know it’s the best way I can show You to them.
ITS NOT UP TO US TO GET EVEN, OUR JOB IS TO LOVE IN THE WAY JESUS SHOWED US
