EAT FAST, PAY LESS
I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you (V.1).
Psalm 63:1-8
Reading
A hotel in Madurai has started a ‘parotta buffet’—eat a minimum of 10 parottas within thirty minutes and pay only half the price! After one person piled food into their face at the thirty-minute buffet, they said: “I lost my politeness, stuffing my mouth with yet more food. I lost all respect … and I lost any interest in food for the rest of the day. And my stomach hurt bad!”
Sometimes we treat the Bible like a buffet. We wolf it down as fast as we can and wonder why we haven’t learned very much. Like actual food, our spiritual ‘food’ needs chewing! If we speed read the stories and challenges in the Bible, to get it over with, we’ll miss what God is saying to us. A good way to know that we’re not really paying attention to our Bible reading is if we come away without learning, or being reminded of, a single thing about God.
Let’s take on the same attitude as the writer of Psalm 119: “I meditate on your [teaching], and consider your ways” (V.15). That’s the way to treat the Bible—taking our time to think it over and talk about it with God. Let’s not come to the Bible as if we were going to a parotta buffet. Spending quality time in its stories will strengthen our spiritual well-being.
READING THE BIBLE WITHOUT TAKING TIME TO THINK IT OVER IS LIKE EATING WITHOUT CHEWING.
