Whispers

WHISPERS

Too much talk leads to sin. Be sensible and keep your mouth shut (V.19 NLT).

Proverbs 10:11-23
Reading

In Lucknow, there is a historical building called the Bara Imambara it has a labyrinth of about a thousand passageways called the Bhool Bhulaiya which connects you to the roof of the building. There are many interesting facts about the labyrinth. One main fact is how when you even so much so as light a matchstick the sound can be heard at the vast expanse of the labyrinth’s balcony.

In other words, you and a friend could sit on opposite sides of the Bhool Bhulaiya and carry on a conversation without having to speak above a whisper.

While that might be an interesting fact to know about the Bara Imambara it can also be a warning to us. What we say about others in secret can travel just as easily as whispers travel around that gallery. And not only can our gossip travel far and wide, but it often causes a lot of hurt along the way.

Perhaps this is why the Bible often warns us about the ways we speak. The book of Proverbs tells us, “Too much talk leads to sin. Be sensible and keep your mouth shut” (V.19 NLT).

To Pray about
Father, help us to be careful about what we say. And please help us know when to stay silent. Help us to be the kind of people who stop gossip, rather than sending it further.

GOSSIP ENDS AT A CLOSED MOUTH.
