4 Things I Learnt from Penguin Bloom

If we only fully realized how invaluable our mind is, we would be demanding a price for people to get into our heads with their content.

Sometime back, I had a rough night and woke up the next morning realizing I was carrying some unresolved hurt from the night before. What would have typically turned into a gloomy day surprisingly became a beautiful day when a dear friend suggested we watch a true story.

The movie was called Penguin Bloom. It’s about a woman who loses her ability to walk after a fatal fall from a terrace during her family trip to Thailand. An unusual inspiration from a magpie, along with her husband’s irrevocable love, pushes her to explore kayaking, and she then goes on to becoming a World Champion in it. Watching a person beat life’s odds and realizing that great and beautiful things happen in life filled me with tears of joy. The experience left me hopeful and also very aware of an important fact. My emotions and thoughts are so powerfully influenced by what I watch that a movie turned my rough morning into a beautiful day.

That’s when I realized I need to protect my mind. We all hear about data theft and hacking. We install the best antivirus to protect our tech, and yet, how strange that we do not apply the same logic to our irreplaceable mind that constantly gets abused?

Peer pressure definitely plays a key role. Maybe we don’t want to appear snobbish, so we’ll sit through the explicit scenes in a movie with friends though it makes us uncomfortable. We don’t want to appear like a scaredy cat so we’ll agree to watch a show on supernatural elements though we know for sure we’ll get nightmares that very same night. Maybe we hate profane language but the latest song is quite the rage, and FOMO gets to us, so we decide to listen and pretend to enjoy it. We all do a lot of things to fit in, but the aftermath is always dealt alone in the confines of our mind.  It could be tormenting fear, bitterness, anger, and a whole bunch of emotions that influences our behavior without our control.

One of the simplest yet most powerful Bible verses is ‘A man reaps what he sows.’ It is absurd to think we could be anything different from what we feed our mind with. Our behaviour is influenced by our thoughts and our thoughts come from our mind, what we use to fuel our mind is up to us.

Next time when you are about to watch or listen to something, take a chance and choose something better, something positive, something hopeful, regardless if you’re alone or with friends. You would be helping not just your mind but your generation to have a better chance at living. I for one am sure I had a good friend to point me in the right direction.

To sum it up

  • Protect your mind, it is invaluable
  • We all do things to fit in but the aftermath affects us.
  • Our behavior stems from our thoughts, and our thoughts affect our mind.
  • Choose something positive so you give your mind and others a better chance.
