I Am Radical
In chemistry, a radical has something extra, namely an unpaired electron that makes it slightly unsteady
It is highly reactive and seeks means to find fulfilment in other molecules. Ironically enough, it is also named as a free radical.
But is it, really?
We are also surrounded by many who claim to be free voices. They raise their voices against unjust, inhumane, and unethical behaviour. They influence many around them, and together they lead a revolution. They are driven by their dream of being free. From oppression. From exploitation. From corruption. They well deserve the title of ‘Radical’.
It is, thus, natural to assume that radicals are people who shake things up. They are the alpha pack leaders. They don’t sit still and hope that things will change. They are the change-makers of the world. And yet, there is another potent brand of radical that is subtle. The kind who creates change not only on the outside but on the inside as well.
Like a flower that blooms in silence, its beauty does not diminish just because no one sees it or acknowledges it. A caterpillar undergoes multiple changes to become a butterfly, just so it can live a short time, sometimes just a month. While nature gives us various examples of silent magnificence, we can also see examples of this in the Bible
A Radical called Noah
The story has even been adapted into Hollywood movies because of its ability to boggle the mind. Noah and his ark are a byword for the marvellous. He is the classic example of what a life surrendered to God’s plan can accomplish. Imagine building a big ol’ boat to flee a flood in a land that has never experienced rain. It must have sounded ridiculous, and Noah must have been the laughing stock of the whole place. While the whole world went one way, he went the other. Even to the point of ridicule, Noah obeyed God, and He honours him by saving his family from the devastating flood. Awesomeness need not be loud. It doesn’t even have to be evident to the human eye.
A Radical called David
Think of David. He is one of the most memorable kings of Israel. Yet, he was chosen when he was just a shepherd boy, the youngest of his siblings, the least valued in the family. God specializes in using the ordinary to do the extra-ordinary. He picked up a once shepherd boy, an outcast, and made him king. You see God doesn’t see you the way others do. Man looks at the appearance, but [God] looks at the heart.
Both Noah and David loved God and were chosen by Him to accomplish His plan for the world. Do you seek to be radical in this world? Do you long to see a world filled with love, harmony, brotherhood, and justice? Then, you must first seek the truth about God and this world.
God is not some genie who will grant your three wishes whenever you ask for them. He is someone you must want to get to know better. When we surrender to Him, we become instruments in His mighty hands. We become channels of change in this world of unrest. Living radically on our own can be tiresome and difficult. Human willpower and revolutions cannot bring lasting change. We need to seek a higher truth.
So, seek it and let it set you free to live radically.
