The first thing that comes to mind when I think about the recent Coronavirus Pandemic is how helpless we are. In our current reality, where an AI robot called Sophia just received citizenship in the UK, and where space tourism is almost a reality. It only took a microscopic virus to bring the world to its knees. World leaders who were previously debating about policies, building walls, going to war, nuclear power, supremacy, and religious radicalization, are now humbled without a clue on how to stop a tiny virus. Many people scurry and hide from this invisible force, which is now ruling the world, which has reduced economic stability by over 30% within a few months.

The worst-hit places like Italy and Iran are now helplessly looking towards overworked, and already frightened medical personnel. And even countries that boast of being developed, with sophisticated advances in the field of medicine are having to turn away patients without room for them. It has come to a point where it has become very scary to imagine how this new world would look like if the virus actually impacts all of us and doesn’t go away. But it’s also a reminder to me that I am finite, that man is finite, no matter how popular, rich or powerful he or she is – man can never be all-powerful. It also showcases that man can’t play God anymore and that we need help. Help from someone more powerful than we are, who is infinite and all-powerful – One who can look out for us.

This is a humbling thought, yes, but it’s also extremely comforting. This is because over and over again, history and science have proven that we are not alone. No matter how many scientists debate that our existence is a random coincidence, there also seems to be evidence pointing out that this is an impossibility. Neither Darwin’s theory of evolution nor the Big Bang theory has been fully proven as true. In fact, it has been disproved by certain scientific communities. All you have to do is some digging and you will find that there is much division amongst scientists as to how we came about. And today even top scientists swing more towards the fact that all of this was created by an intelligent creator.
History, on the other hand, shows us that there is only one individual who ever claimed to be God and proved it by rising from the dead – Jesus Christ. The Resurrection of Christ is a fact that many top historians can’t argue. Many scientists and historians who have tried to unbiasedly dig up the facts, but have found themselves believing in God, in Jesus. One example of such an individual who did his fair bit of investigation was Lee Strobel, a star reporter from the New York Tribune who later became a follower of Christ and published the book ‘The Case for Christ,’ which was made into a movie later as well. I myself did my own digging before I believed.

This news is the best news amidst all the other news that the world throws at me now. It makes me glad that there is someone other than humankind who exists, who can take charge of everything. After all, we as humans have not been able to get much right on our own. People die daily from diarrhoea, hunger, man-made calamities, war, and millions are displaced daily from their homes and safety because we have messed up the planet. The only reason the World is reacting so strongly to this Pandemic is that it can impact anyone, not just a forgotten bunch in Africa or Syria that we can be ignored.
Amidst this mess, the Bible paints a wholly different picture of God. He capable, He is strong, He is loving and He will go to any extent to preserve us, His creation. The Bible verse that comes to my mind in times like this is a prayer that says, “gives us this day our daily bread.” This line correctly represents our state as beings who need God every day to exist. Almost like daily wage earners look up to their masters for their survival and existence. But instead of treating us like slaves, this Master decided to adopt us as sons and daughters. He lavished on us His love and provision, we see this every morning in the beautiful sunrise, the food we eat and the air we breathe, all of which we took for granted till now, even the years we spend on this Earth is borrowed from Him.

Let us let God rule over our lives and the fate of this planet. Quoting an unlikely source here from a famous pop song:
“People killing, people dying, children hurt and women crying
Why don’t we practice what we preach and show the other cheek.
Father, father help us, send us guidance from above, because it got me
questioning where is the love”
Maybe it’s time to let God rule and follow the rules that He gives. Show love in a way that is more contagious than the virus itself, and that could be the real cure for our situation.
